Equality between Women and Men in Portuguese Public Administration: the case of the Municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia

Abstract

In this study, we proposed to analyze the critical mass of women and men in the Municipal Council of Gaia (CMG), over the years, as there is a lack in terms of exploring information disaggregated by gender. Thus, through the Social Balance Sheets, an exploratory analysis, graphical representations, and hypothesis tests were carried out. The statistical analysis showed that the underrepresentation trends reported in the literature are contradicted in the case of the number of women employed in Public Administration in Portugal, between 2011 and 2022, and at CMG, from 2017. Furthermore, the CMG harbored significant differences between genders, in terms of careers and employment types.
