Social mediation and school violence in the Brazilian context: perspectives, needs and actions

Abstract

In this paper, we aim to develop an approach to social mediation, focusing empirically on the Brazilian context, taking into account what has been conventionally called, in the sociology of education, the ‘era of school incidents’, whose distinctive feature is violence in educational institutions. We start from the following research problem: How has social mediation been developed in Brazil in the face of school violence? Our hypothesis is that social mediation actions in Brazil are fragmented and limited to specific contexts. In conclusion, we point out that the era of school incidents results from a set of associated factors, such as structural problems in society and management of education systems.
