Education, inequality and mobility: is the “social elevator” broken?

Based on the knowledge produced by Portuguese sociology, the article analyses the relationship between education and social inequalities, discussing whether, in recent decades, the educational system has promoted social mobility and equal opportunities or whether it has fostered the reproduction of the class structure.
