Abstract

We propose a Sociology of Artificial Intelligence (AI), reinforcing the need to understand in depth the social implications of this technology from a perspective far removed from deterministic visions. We present guidelines for approaching AI as a socio-technical phenomenon and for critically deconstructing the cultural myths, metaphors and expectations surrounding these technologies, and the business and political rhetoric that accompanies them. One of the distinctive features of sociological inquiry will be to raise questions about who defines what is “good” for society, what social values should prevail, and how AI can be used in ways that benefit society as a whole.
